We are, all of us, even the sun…products of the void. And, like the sun, one day we will burn out and return to the dark and directionless realm of everything and nothing. Chaos that grand abyss beyond the scale of our imagining is part of us, and we are part of it.

The creation of order, the work of The Father and of men, is a response to disorder and confusion and darkness. Just as the knight requires a dragon to slay or an enemy to fight in order to become what he is, The Father, the king, the creator of order requires mystery and disarray to become what he is and do what it is in his nature to do. To create hierarchy one must begin with some kind of anarchy.

In his emulation of The Father, man must descend into a realm of conceptual darkness, but to become and remain what he is, he must also return from it and continue to be an ordering source of illumination.

Last year I commissioned this rendering of The Lord of the Earth — the masculine fertility archetype I discussed in Fire in the Dark.

“The Lord of the Earth manages and shapes the material and social chaos of everyday life to perpetuate life and order and promote prosperity. He is an intermediary between earth and sky who brings natural and human resources into the harmonious service of The Father’s cosmic order and human flourishing. The Lord of the Earth is a patron of the tribe and the people, representing the spirit of the working man from shepherds and stock-breeders to farmers, artisans, and merchants. He represents all of the work that must be done to satisfy our basic animal needs and wants and, in exceeding them, bring joy into the world around us.”
